The Shire of Rio de las Animas is a chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc (SCA). The SCA is a non-profit organization devoted to researching and recreating the Middle Ages in the present. Some members concentrate on the study of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance Eras, with many members working to recreate the arts and skills of these eras. Other members concentrate on the study of the Middle East and Asian Cultures, with many members working to recreate the arts and skills of their chosen areas and also explore the interaction between Europe and Asia during the periods under study.
In the "Known World of the Current Middle Ages" Rio de las Animas is Located within the Kingdom of the Outlands. Our shire was made official December 21, 2002. Our shire encompasses the following areas in Colorado, it does not extend across any state boundaries. All of La Plata, Montezuma, San Juan, Archuleta, Dolores counties and a small portion of San Miguel.
